Besides Amsterdam there are many more old and cosy cities that you could visit in Noord-Holland. Alkmaar for example, is known as the capital of cheese, you will be amazed of the old city centre. There are nice shops and terraces. Entertaining visits are the cheese market, the cheese museum and the icon of the Grote Sint Laurenskerk. Haarlem also has such a cosy old center with narrow streets, shops and terraces. Here you can follow the courtyard route, but also visit the Grote Markt and the Frans Hals Museum.

The old fishing villages of Volendam, Monnickendam and Edam are characteristic. They are known for their authentic houses and beautiful harbours. A visit to the Edam cheese museum and a picture in traditional Volendam costumes should not be missed out on. Authentic houses, especially mills, can be found at the Zaanse Schans. Together with the old crafts that you can see here, they give a good impression of life in the 18th century.

The authentic nature of Texel

The famous island of Texel is located in the remarkable nature reserve of the Wadden Sea. The rhythm of the day is not determined by people, but by the tides. Therefore, you will only find nature that you cannot find somewhere else in the world. A ferry departs from Den Helder. If you are a real adventurer, you could also make the crossing by foot and go mudflat walking (only possible at low tide). From Den Helder you can walk over the seabed to Texel.

On Texel itself you can enjoy a wonderful bike ride or walk along the paths in the forests, dunes, heaths and the most beautiful beaches. Learn everything about it at Ecomare. Ecomare is a Texel museum, seal sanctuary, aquarium and bird sanctuary all in one. The day will be a guaranteed success if you end it with an ice-cold Skuumkoppe from the Texel beer brewery.

Explore the capital Amsterdam

The capital of the Netherlands has the allure of a big metropolis. However, everything can be reached by foot. It is a fantastic city to go shopping, visit museums, walk along the city canals or just to soak up the culture. The beautiful canal houses and historical monuments that date back to the golden age are authentic. One example is the Palace at Dam Square. Leidse square is the place where everything happens. Here you can find many terraces, cinemas, the municipal theatre, other theatres and nightlife.

The Rijksmuseum and Anne Frank House are the places of interest that you should not miss out on. However, a canal cruise is also amusing. The Artis Zoo, the eldest zoo of the Netherlands in the city centre, which will not close after sunset during the summer months is great for children. Kids and parents who are not scared should go to the Amsterdam Dungeon, which is the city’s most scary and thrilling attraction.

Tip: with the IAmsterdam City Card, you can make unlimited use of all public transport. You also get discounts or even free admission to most museums and sights.
