What does Camping het Horstmannsbos have to offer?
Dogs are allowed at Camping het Horstmannsbos. So the whole family can enjoy a well-earned holiday! An animation team is present at the campsite during the summer holidays. During the activities, the team tries to involve nature as much as possible. For example, you can build huts in the woods or search for bugs in the sand.
Surroundings of Camping het Horstmannsbos
Whether you like nature or prefer other activities, there is also plenty to do outside the campsite. Camping Het Horstmannsbos borders directly on the Drouwenerzand nature reserve. The area, with woods, heath and sand drifts, is managed by the Drentse Landschap, which has a flock of Drentse Heath Sheep grazing there. The area is characterised by juniper thickets. Together with the the grassbell, the wild thyme and the prickly broom, these plants are very striking. In fact, juniper, wild thyme and prickly broom are on the Dutch red list of endangered plant species.
A lot of fauna can also be found here. In fact, several animals living here are protected. Besides Drouwenerzand, the Hondsrug is also in the vicinity of the Horstmannsbos campsite. Hondsrug is an area of hills in Drenthe and Groningen, stretching from Emmen to the city of Groningen. It is part of a larger set of sand ridges and stream valleys in Drenthe and Groningen, also called the Hondsrug system. Together with part of the surrounding area, the Hondsrug forms the only geopark in the Netherlands. The area consists of coniferous and deciduous forests, lakes, meadows, villages, streams, drifting sands, heaths and fields. In this area, five nature reserves have been designated as Natura 2000 areas: (Zuidlaardermeer, Drentsche Aa, Bargerveen, Drouwenerzand and Elperstroom). These areas are home to several rare plant and animal species.
