Experience at Campsite Het Horstmannsbos
At campsite Het Horstmannsbos it is allowed tob ring your dog. This way the whole family can enjoy their well deserved holiday!
During the summer holidays there is a animation team present at the campsite. During the activities the team tries to include the nature as much as possible. Think of building huts in the forest or searching for insects in the sand.

Nature reserve Het Drouwenerzand
Campsite Het Horstmannsbos borders directly with nature reserve Het Drouwenerzand. The area, including the forests, heath and sand drifts, are protected by Drentse Landschap. They let a herd of sheeps graze the area. One of the charateristics of the area are the juniperus. Together with the sand blue, the harebell, the wild thyme and the gorse, these plants are very striking. The juniper, the wild thyme and the gorse are on the Dutch red list of endangered plant species. Besides the flora, there is a lot of fauna as well. There are several protected animals.
Besides Het Drouwenerzand, the Hondrug is also located nearby Campsite Het Horstmannsbos. Hondsrug is a hilly area across Drenthe and Groningen. It stretches out between Emmen and the city of Groningen and it is also callled the Hondrugsysteem. The Hondsrug, together with a part of the surrounding area, is the only geopark in the Netherlands.
The area consists of coniferous and deciduous forests, lakes, meadows, villages, streams, shifting sands, heaths and fields. In the area there are 5 nature reserves mentioned as Natura 2000 areas: Zuidlaardermeer, Drentsche Aa, Bargerveen, Drouwenerzand and Elperstroom. Several rare plants and animal species occur in these areas such as the stemless primrose, the alcon blue, the night orchid, the crested newt and the red-backed shrike.
