The natural surroundings of Friesland

About 500 metres from Camping Eefting is the Tjeukermeer lake, where it is also possible to moor a boat. There is also a nice beach for swimming and the possibility to have lunch, dinner and a drink at the pavilion. Within the Dutch province of Friesland, the Tjeukemeer is the largest inland lake. It is located in the southwest corner, in the municipality of De Friese Meren, on the border of the former municipalities of Lemsterland and Skarsterlân.  The westernmost part of Tjeukemeer is bisected by a motorway, the A6. Here, the Follegasloot forms the connection with the Prinses Margrietkanaal. On the northern side are the Scharsterrijn and the Zandwater, and on the eastern side the Broeresloot. The lake is about 22 km², but not equally deep everywhere. Some parts are even less than a metre deep. In the lake are the islands Tsjûkepolle, Marchjepolle and Ganzetippe. Around the lake are the villages of Echten, Echtenerbrug, Rohel, Delfstrahuizen, Oosterzee and Oldeouwer, where there are also various activities to do. At the Tsjûkemar, near the Echten pumping station, is the statue of Tsjûke and March. Here, the origins of the lake are told.  There are also cosy water sports towns such as Lemmer, Terherne (chameleon village) and Langweer. And then you have the atmospheric Balk, on the river luts, and Sloten. With its 745 inhabitants, Sloten is one of the smallest towns in the Netherlands. The Frisian Balloon Festival The Frisian Balloon Festival is an annual event held from the Nutsbaan in Joure. During the event, about 35 hot air balloons take off and various side activities are organised. The Ballonfeesten have been held since 1986. This event was so successful that it was made an annual event. In 2005, the parties celebrated their 20th anniversary in grand fashion. Unique balloons from different countries took off, such as a locomotive from Germany and a dragon from the United States. The event gave Joure the nickname Balloon City and is one of the Netherlands' biggest balloon events.
